When a patient is advised they need to remove some or all their teeth, the decision to do so can be very daunting and personal. At Horseheads Dental, Dr. Eng understands this and he and his staff will take the time to explain to each patient what their options are in replacing their teeth. One of the common ways of restoring a smile is by wearing a custom denture.

Types of Dentures

Dentures come in two types: full (complete), which is used when all teeth are missing in the upper and/or lower jaw; and partial, when only some teeth are missing.

Full Denture

Two types of full dentures are available: immediate and conventional. Both types rest on top of and are supported by the gum tissue.

Immediate dentures are placed in the mouth immediately after extractions, so you will not leave the surgeon’s office without a new set of teeth. It’s important to know that the immediate denture will have to be refitted several times as the jawbone heals from the surgery. In addition, the aesthetics of the denture is permanent. If the teeth look too short or too long and it’s difficult to speak clearly, the denture cannot be changed.

Conventional dentures are constructed several months after the jawbone is healed from the extraction surgery. Immediately after surgery and during this period of healing, you will wear a “provisional” denture-similar to an immediate denture—that can be refitted for later use as a spare denture. With a conventional denture, you have a say on how the denture will look to ensure the right fit and aesthetics for you.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures fill spaces where two or more natural teeth are missing in the upper or lower jaw. They also help prevent the remaining natural teeth from shifting into the empty spaces.

Implant-Supported Dentures (Full and Partial)

To provide security and stability, full and partial dentures can be supported by implants. Some of the key features and benefits of an implant-supported denture:

  • It snaps in the mouth, securing it in place without denture adhesives.
  • It is comfortable to wear-no more sore spots for experienced denture wearers.
  • A slimmer design. Because suction in an upper full denture is no longer required, the plastic that traditionally covers the roof of the mouth is not needed.
  • It does not inhibit your ability to chew and speak clearly.
  • It preserves jawbone height.
