Two types of full dentures are available: immediate and conventional. Both types rest on top of and are supported by the gum tissue.
Immediate dentures are placed in the mouth immediately after extractions, so you will not leave the surgeon’s office without a new set of teeth. It’s important to know that the immediate denture will have to be refitted several times as the jawbone heals from the surgery. In addition, the aesthetics of the denture is permanent. If the teeth look too short or too long and it’s difficult to speak clearly, the denture cannot be changed.
Conventional dentures are constructed several months after the jawbone is healed from the extraction surgery. Immediately after surgery and during this period of healing, you will wear a “provisional” denture-similar to an immediate denture—that can be refitted for later use as a spare denture. With a conventional denture, you have a say on how the denture will look to ensure the right fit and aesthetics for you.
Partial dentures fill spaces where two or more natural teeth are missing in the upper or lower jaw. They also help prevent the remaining natural teeth from shifting into the empty spaces.
