Dental Implants

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a long-lasting replacement for one or more teeth. It provides a foundation for a replacement tooth that look, feel, and function like a natural tooth. The implant itself is a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone where the natural tooth is missing. This metal post acts as a replacement for the missing tooth’s root. When the healing is completed and the implant is fully bonded to your jawbone, which may take three to six months, depending on the individual, the implant is then ready to receive a crown to be placed on top of it. During the healing process, you may need to wear a temporary tooth replacement.

Advantages of Dental Implants

  • It can replace one or more teeth without using the adjacent teeth for support, as one would require in a traditional dental bridge.
  • Implant restorations do not ever decay like natural teeth. Ever had a crown or bridge supported by natural teeth only to be replaced again after a few years because of recurrent decay? Implant restorations are made of titanium and porcelain, so there is never a threat of decay.
  • Loose dentures? A thing of the past with removable implant supported overdentures. Removable overdentures simply click on to and over implants to provide security no traditional denture ever could. Additionally, since suction is no longer needed for the overdenture to be successfully, the part of the upper denture that traditionally covers the roof of the mouth is no longer needed and can be removed.
  • Implant restorations are the most natural replacement for a missing tooth. They are much easier to floss and clean as oppose to traditional dental bridges.

Are Dental Implants right for me?

  • Implants require a healthy amount of bone in the jawbone to be successful. Dr. Eng and the implant surgeon will evaluate and determine if there is sufficient bone to support the implant and determine if additional procedures are required to increase the amount of bone needed.
  • Chronic conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, alcohol and substance abuse problems and autoimmune disorders can compromise the success of an implant and make the implant site prone to infections. Again, Dr. Eng and the implant surgeon will help you determine if implants are appropriate.
  • Cancer treatment such as chemo and radiation therapy may prevent and delay your from receiving implants.
Here at Horseheads Dental, depending on your individual needs, we offer either one visit, same day, digitally designed and computer constructed CEREC crowns or the traditional two visit dental laboratory created crown.

Disadvantages of Dental Implants

  • Time. Implants take time for it to bond to the jawbone. Because of that, it may take up to six months before the implant restoration is completed. During that time, a temporary tooth replacement may be required.
  • Implants may be more expensive than other dental procedures and may not be covered by dental insurance.
Dental implants have a long, successful track record and improvement are being made all the time. Our office recommends PerioProtect to help insure and protect your valuable investment for years to come.
