Dental Crowns

A crown is a restoration that covers the entire biting surface of a damaged tooth, much like a protective helmet or cap. It strengthens and protects the tooth if the tooth is missing a large area of its chewing surface, such as damage from extensive tooth decay, from a large defective filling or a cracked tooth. When there is only a small amount of damage, a tooth colored composite filling can be used.

Same day crowns

Traditionally, a dental crown would usually take two visits to complete. The tooth is first prepared, an impression of the tooth is taken, and the impression is then sent to a dental laboratory for crown fabrication. Many people aren’t fond of impressions, as it requires having bad tasting messy pastes being placed in your mouth, that has to remain there for a few minutes while the impression pastes sets. During the two to three weeks it takes for your new crown to arrive back from the laboratory, you will be wearing a temporary crown temporarily cemented over your prepared tooth. Because it is temporarily cemented on, it can sometimes be uncomfortable or, worse yet, come off at an inconvenient time. Here at Horseheads Dental, since we utilize CEREC crown technology, we can fabricate a crown and place it in your mouth the very same day, no more multiple visits, goopy impression pastes and temporary crowns.

Why do I need a crown?

  • Protect a weakened tooth (fractured, cracked or decayed.)
  • Change the size, shape, and color of a tooth.
  • Cover a dental implant.
  • Replace large or fractured fillings.
  • Tooth has undergone root canal treatment.
Here at Horseheads Dental, depending on your individual needs, we offer either one visit, same day, digitally designed and computer constructed CEREC crowns or the traditional two visit dental laboratory created crown.

No more temporary dental crowns or additional visits.

For your convenience and comfort, we are pleased to offer dental crowns made with CEREC™, a highly precise computer milling machine that makes crowns right in the office in just one visit.

Does your dental crown not fit right?

CEREC™ crowns are convenient and aesthetically desirable, and they will never keep you from eating or drinking normally. They also dramatically reduce cracking and lower the likelihood of needing future root canal treatments.

Your CEREC™ crown

During your visit to get your CEREC crown, Dr. Eng will first prepare your tooth by removing any decay or damaged parts of the tooth and then shaping the tooth to make room for the crown. Then, a state-of-the-art 3D scanning digital camera will be used to create a digital optical impression. With this impression, there is no need for the traditional physical impressions using bulky mouth trays and goopy pastes.
Dr. Eng will then employ CEREC’s powerful CAD/CAM digital design software, to virtually create your restoration so it will be custom fitted to your tooth and bite. Once the design is completed, the virtual crown will then be wirelessly sent over to our in-house CEREC CNC milling machine to be fabricated. The entire crown-making process that traditionally took multiple visits can now be finished in one visit. Once the crown is ready, Dr. Eng will try it on, make sure it fits properly and that you are satisfied. Once that is done, your crown will be glazed and bonded into place.
